Grimaldi's Pizzeria

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria
Brooklyn

Watercolor & Ink on 12x11” Cotton Rag

The first time I stepped onto the street outside Grimaldi’s, the hum of cars crossing the Brooklyn Bridge filled the air. I sketched the pizzeria with the bridge rising in the background and the bright orange New York Telephone Company Building next door. Designed by Ralph Walker in the Art Deco style, its signature terracotta facade is accented with intricate bronze and metal detailing, geometric patterns, and distinctive gargoyle-like figures, making it a visually striking landmark. Originally the headquarters of New York’s telephone company, it now houses businesses and lofts, preserving a piece of Brooklyn’s industrial past while contributing to its modern revival. Including this building in my sketch allowed me to capture not just the vibrant colors and architectural charm, but also the layered history and unique character that define this iconic corner of DUMBO
