Minarets of Umayyad Mosque

Minarets of Umayyad Mosque
Damascus

Watercolor & Ink on 8x10” Cotton Rag

This sketch focuses on the three minarets of the Umayyad Mosque, each reflecting a different era. The Minaret of the Bride is the oldest, from the early Umayyad period, with simple, sturdy proportions. The Minaret of Jesus was added later, showing taller, more slender forms influenced by regional Islamic styles. The Minaret of Qaytbay, built in the Mamluk period, features intricate stone carvings and decorative motifs. Together, the minarets illustrate the mosque’s layered history and evolving architectural influences.
